Did you know that the Cocoa Bean was once used as currency?
The Mayan civilization, one of the oldest civilizations on the American continent used the cocoa beans as a barter currency to exchange for food or clothes, as well as for preparing a bitter drink, known as Xocoatl, which was nothing like the hot chocolate that we drink today. This beverage was made from roasted and ground cocoa beans, mixed with water and spices.
